An Irish Granite Staddle Stone probably dating to the 18th century. Staddle stones were originally used to elevate grain stores and haystacks. The Staddle stones supported the grain store off the ground thereby protecting the stored grain from vermin and water ingress. This stone has more recently been used as a garden decoration and revealed itself to be much higher than originally thought after 18 inches or so had spent a century or two underground.
Condition commensurate with age. Moss and Lichen covered. The cap has a had a later steel pin inserted to fit into a drilled hole in the stem for more stability.
